Tops and Bottoms Regatta, at the Don Rowing Club, August 12, 2006

Full of visions of daring do, 20 rowers from the Glueph Rowing club descended upon the Don rowing club ready to do battle in novice and rec events, both 4+ and 8+. Only to be foiled by the draw, but our group behaved valiantly, and took the disappointment in their stride.

The first of our crews to row were our jr rowers in a rec quad, Katrina, Garrah, Val, Shane with Chris.O as cox. Resplendent in their Hs colours they powered down the 700m, to a our first gold medal, leaving their opponets far behind.

Next up was a rec 4 Blair, Irene, Chris, and Malcom with Erica as our cox, Erica was the heart, and lungs of our boat but the Argos with a boat full of younger, fitter, bodies prevailed

Our pumped up novice crew of Tarra, Bre,Jodi,Dayna with Ericaas cox, surged down the coarse only to be impeded by the other boat. a protest was submitted to the Don Club president John Carrie ( who was coxing the other boat) and a re race at the end of the day was set up.

Guelph jr. rowers brought home gold in the rec double event, with Katrina and Garrah putting the great coaching they had from James White into practice, and pulled well ahead of their opponents.

After Lunch, our noivce crew of Tarra, Dayna,Bre,Jodi Shawna ,Nicole,Val, anchored by Nicholas and coxed by Katrina ran  afoul of a broken rudder, which the boat to veer off course.

Blair and Sonia, sportingly agreed to race an adptive couple in a double. The Archibalds are a blind couple that row every day at the Argos, they have a coach following them radioing course intructions. Unfortunately the drizzle that started to fall caused the radio system to fail. Blair an Sonia showed true sportmanship in refusing the medal for the event.

In the re race the Ports Stars with Katrina a cox, flew down the 700m, to win a gold.
In all it, was a fun day.   Christopher Wade, Regatta Coordinator

Head of the Thames, at London, Ontario Sept. 16, 2006

Guelph rowing club had 5 Recreational crews in the Head of the Thames taking home one firsts and one second

The 4x crew of Lorraine Norminton, Janet Leonhard, Isobelle Gray, Pat Zullinov rowed to a repectable 3rd place, using the stratagy of following a London Rowing club boat and finished in a time of  23.34

Our 4+ Boats were led by the blistering pace set by Pat Weir, BLair Capling, Jana& Scott Pollard with Chris Osuch as Cox, with a time of 22:20, which earned a first place medal.

The team of Mike Whitehead, Julie Horrocks, Chris Wade, Deb Kirkpatrick and Nicole Maclean as cox scorched down the the 5k, in 22.40 taking a 2nd place, not bad for a team that had only row together once.

The Port Stars, an all female crew  of novice rowers,Tarra Myers,Bre Bolton, Dayna (The Axe)Ferdinandi,Jodi Dobbie, with Katrina Laquian as cox ripped down the twisty coarse to place 3rd, in a time of 23.30

The team of Vlad Zulinov, Irene Gelyk,John Liefeld, and Joanne Ryks( who jumped into the boat at the last minut to replace an ill crew member) with Nicole Bellefluer as cox, scored a solid 5th place with a time of 24.25

The Head of the Thames was challenging and was as much fun as ever.  Let's do it again next year, so put it on your Calenders.
