NAVIGATING THE LAKE:
1.      GRC protocol is for all boats to traverse the lake in an anti-clockwise direction. Keep the closest shoreline on the starboard side of the boat.

2.      Stay at least 15 Meters away from the water line on the ISLAND, (the island opposite the sailing club). As general rule, staying at least 15 to 20 meters from the waterline (not the shoreline), on the starboard shore is a good idea.

3.      When passing the GRCA Hillside Festival Island, DO NOT follow the shore as it curves towards the Dam. Keep in a straight line until you have crossed over the old Watson Road (if you don’t know where that is – study the chart on the side of the oar shed), then turn and follow the (underwater) Watson Road, keeping it on the starboard side.

4.      As the water level drops throughout the summer, check the Chart on the Oar Shed to be familiar with the location of the shallows and stump markers (A map with stump marker locations WILL be posted on the side of the Oar Shed when the water level drops). Stumps with Yellow markers should be passed on the starboard side of the boat. Stumps with White markers can be passed on either side.

5.      When leaving the dock or returning to the docks, be aware of the movements of other boats doing the same, or passing the docks. Boats on your starboard side have right-of-way.

For the Varsity Season

 1. Two additional Navigation Lights/Markers have been added.

a: A “TURNING LIGHT/MARK – positioned on the lake midline halfway
between Navigation Lights #2 and #3.
       b. Nav. Light #7 has been positioned 1 KM from #6, towards the dam.
(From this light the light on the dam will be visible (when rowing in the dark).

 2. Two Yellow Marks have been placed to warn you about the Rock Pile at the SW end of the small island.

(Say hello to the Cormorants as you pass the rock pile.)

 3.  Protocol Reminder

  • Pass all Navigation Lights/marks on your PORT side.
  • Travel counterclockwise, with the closest shoreline on your starboard side.
  • Keep at least 20 meters away from the shoreline on starboard.
  • Time trial crews stay closer to the line of Nav. Lights/Marks. All non-time trial crews stay closer to the shoreline.
  • Pass the yellow cylinders positioned south west of Hillside Island on your Starboard side, then turn and head for the GRCA Beach.
  • When returning from the Dam or Rock wall do not cross the lake midline toward the docks, until you have passed the new “Turning Light/Mark”.
